What is ECU tuning?
Your car’s ECU (engine control unit) is the computer that controls fuelling, boost and ignition. ECU tuning, also called remapping, adjusts this software to improve how the engine performs, usually giving more power and torque, sharper throttle response and sometimes better fuel economy.
At Car Lab Performance we use the KESS3 tuning tool. Depending on your car, we either read the ECU through the OBD port, or remove it and read it on the bench. Your original file is then sent to Viezu, and as a Viezu approved dealer, we receive a custom tune file made for your car and engine. We then write it to your car and carry out a final check to make sure everything is running as it should.
Because we’re mobile, we do this at your home or workplace anywhere in Birmingham, usually in 1 to 2 hours for both OBD and Bench jobs.
How it works
- Get in touch: Send us your car make, model and engine, and we’ll give you a quote.
- Diagnostics: We check your car over before we touch the software, to make sure it’s in good health.
- Read: We read your ECU using KESS3, either through the OBD port or on the bench, depending on the car.
- Custom tune: Your file goes to Viezu, who create a tune for your car.
- Write and final check: We write the tune to your car and run a final check before you drive away.
Yes. We save your original file before we start, so the car can be returned to stock if needed.
Remapping can potentially void manufacturer warranties, so it’s important to check with your dealer before proceeding with a remap.

Many cars can be read through the OBD port without removing anything. Some ECUs are locked down and need to be removed and read on the bench. We’ll tell you which your car needs when you get in touch
